UNWTO Best Tourism Village, 2021
Best Tourism Villages is a global initiative of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
The aim of the project is to reward those locations where tourism preserves culture, celebrates diversity, generates opportunities and protects the ecosystem. In this sense, Sustain Awards has designed these awards in line with these values.
In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the World Tourism Organization's initiative aims to recognize the work of communities that have adopted innovative and transformative tourism approaches in rural areas.
It is an honor to be part of this project, which aims to make tourism a positive force for transformation and rural development for the well-being of communities. The initiative seeks to maximize the sector's contribution to reducing regional inequalities and fighting the depopulation of rural areas.
The awards also promote the role of tourism in appreciating and preserving villages and their landscapes, knowledge, biological and cultural diversity, as well as local values and activities, including gastronomy. For Sustain Awards, it has been exciting to contribute to a project with a strong social transformation component.
In the latest edition, the initiatives of 44 villages from 32 countries across five world regions were recognized.
